Making the biggest move upward of any team previously in the national top 25, the Highlands University Women's Track and Field team jumped to #15 in the nation in the newest rankings released Tuesday by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Cowgirls had been ranked #22 in the first USTFCCCA poll of the season.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has recently released the 2012 Women's Softball Preseason Poll and Awards. RMAC Women's Softball has expanded this year by including two new teams for the 2012 season. Colorado School of Mines has been selected to finish in first place in conference this season. The Orediggers received the most first place votes with seven. Katelyn Lovato, from Adams State College, was selected as this year's RMAC Preseason Player of the Year. Kelly Unkrich, from Colorado School of Mines, was selected as this year's RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team was picked to finish first in the RMAC Plains Division and second overall in the RMAC according to the RMAC's Preseason Coaches Poll. Colorado Mesa is picked to finish in first place followed by the Cowboys. The University of Nebraska-Kearney and CSU-Pueblo sit in third and fourth place followed by Metro State, Regis University, Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian. The Cowboys finished the 2011 season in sixth place overall with a 27-26 overall record and a 19-21 mark in RMAC play.

A strong showing at the Cherry and Silver Invite over the weekend (Jan. 20-21) moved several HU track and field athletes high onto the NCAA DII national performance lists.
Jillisa Grant, HU's defending national champion in the long jump, asserted herself in a big way at the meet by taking the national lead in both the 200 and long jump.
Jumping head-to-head with athletes from Grand Canyon University who had been leading her in the rankings, Grant lept to a 6.14 (20' 1 ¾”) mark to top all collegiate jumpers and move into first nationally in the event. Later that evening, Grant took to the Albuquerque Convention Center track and sped to a national best 24.15 in the 200 meters.
