The NMHU Cowboys dropped a non-conference game today to in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University. The Cowboys started the game out with a fury, leading the Greyhounds 6-0 after 2 innings played. The Greyhounds didn’t let the 6 run deficit discourage them as they fought back to take the lead 8-6 in the fifth inning. The Greyhounds scored 1 run in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and had a monstrous 5 run 5th inning. Once the Cowboys got behind, they couldn’t muster any offense as they didn’t score a run after the 2nd inning. The Cowboys would end up losing to the Greyhounds 10-6.

Offensive standouts for the Cowboys include: Travon Jackson, Ruben Sanchez, Kyle Gerhart, and Kevin Ayers. Jackson went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored, 1 double, 1 homerun, and 1 RBI. Sanchez went 3 for 5 with 1 RBI. Gerhart went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored. Ayers went 2 for 4 with 1 runs scored, 1 double and 1 RBI. The losing pitcher for the day was Nathan Swanson. Swanson gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 2/3 inning of work.

The Cowboys will have a chance to redeem themselves as they are back in action on Friday, when they play game 1 of a 4 game RMAC series with Colorado School of Mines. The Game starts at 2:00 pm on Friday. They will play again on Saturday at 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm, and wrap up the series on Sunday at 11:00 am.
