The NMHU men’s and women’s rodeo club had a very successful weekend competing at the New Mexico College/High School Challenge in Farmington, N.M. on Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The NMHU wranglers competed against all of the New Mexico colleges that have rodeo as well as against the top five high school programs from around the state.

NMHU Results:

Jesse Estrada had a good weekend of improvement, covering two of three bareback horses. He placed 5th in the second round, 4th in the third round and finished 3rd in the overall average.

Sarah Zybach placed 6th in the first round of breakaway. She also placed 6th in the short round of goat tying and 6th in the overall average of the goat tying. Zybach has been a tough competitor pushing through the pain of a pinched nerve in her back.

Devyn Dennison took 6th place finish overall in the breakaway roping average.

Dustin Pool roped tough all weekend in a strong calf roping competition. He was 6th in round one, 4th in round two, 3rd in round three, and 2nd in the overall average of the calf roping event.

Dustin Pool and Marcus Elkins team roped well all weekend placing 4th in the first round. Unfortunately they took a no-time in the short round.

Jose Griego made some outstanding bull rides this weekend. He put up 80 points for 1st place in round one, 82 points for 2nd place in the short go, and an overall 2nd place finish in the average.

Natalie Burke and her horse “Daisy” ran strong in the barrel racing event. She had a 6th place finish in the short round and a 5th overall average finish.

As a team the men placed 2nd behind New Mexico State University, the women’s team finished in 4th place when the dust settled.

The NMHU rodeo clubs will be in action again on Nov. 15 when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to participate in the New Mexico State University Rodeo.
