Juarez Leads Cowgirls at NMSU Kachina Classic
As she has in every race since donning the Cowgirl uniform in 2007, senior Ana Juarez once again led the NMHU cross country team across the line at the Kachina Classic hosted by New Mexico State University on Saturday. Juarez raced to a top-ten finish among collegiate competitors with a time of 20:31 for the challenging 5k course.
Junior transfer Carolina Garcia was the second HU finisher (13th/20:43). Garcia improved her time from the first meet of the season by nearly 30 seconds. “Most of the runners who raced at both UNM and NMSU ran slower on the NMSU course,” noted HU coach Bob DeVries, “Ana ran the same time and Carol really stepped up her racing to improve that much.”
Sandra Martinez was the third Highlands runner across the line (17th/20:59) followed by Reyna Montano (20th/21:12) and Brieanna Roper (28th/22:17). “To be honest, we did not have good races from our third, fourth and fifth runners—we need to be much closer together and pushing each other if we want to do well, “said DeVries. The HU coach did note that the Cowgirls put four runners in front of RMAC foe Western New Mexico’s number one runner at the meet.
Teams competing were New Mexico State, UTEP, UNM “B” team, Highlands, El Paso CC, Western New Mexico, Dine College, UT-Permian Basin and Navajo Tech.
