The NMHU Rodeo Team traveled to Tsaile, Ariz. to their third competition of the 2009-2010 season on 10/9-10/10. They came back to Las Vegas with 3 championship performers,
Dixie Richards,
Dirk Tavenner and
Jackie Smith.
Dixie Richards won the long go of the Goat Tying with a 7.4 second run. She then won the short round with a 7.7, ultimately beating out the competition by 1.1 seconds to be the Champion Goat Tier.
Dirk Tavenner threw his first 500lb steer in 5.3 seconds to place 3rd in the long go of the Steer Wrestling. However, when the short round came he bettered his time to a 3.9 to win 1st in the short round and take the Championship by 6.7 seconds. Dirk had a good weekend as well in the Tie Down Roping event finishing 5th in the long and short go’s, to stay consistent with a 5th place average finish.
Jackie Smith had a 4th place finish in the long go of the Breakaway Roping with a 3.6 second run. When that was added to her 1st place finish in the short round of 3.0, she had won the Championship with a margin of 1.4 seconds.
Jesse Estrada had a great consistent weekend of his own, placing 3rd in the long and short go’s to finish overall with a 3rd place as well. Congrats on the tough riding competition this past weekend.

Dustin Pool, had a great weekend in the Team Roping event. They were smooth on their first run in the long go and came back with another smooth run of 8.0 to have a combined average of 16.0 to have a Reserve Championship finish. Pool also qualified to the short round in the Steer Wrestling with his 4th place finish in the long go. However, he had some misfortune in the short round losing control of his steer in the short round.
Grayln Elkins and his partner Jordan Mirabal qualified to the short round off of their 5th place finish in the long go. They finished the short round with a tie for 3rd & 4th in the go round. However, they came out with a 3rd place overall finish in the Team Roping.
Callie Jo Moore had a good run in the long go of the Breakaway roping event to finish 5th. However, had a tough calf to catch in the short round and will head back home confident she made the short round and ready for more practice and competition.
Congratulations to both the Cowboys and Cowgirls individual accomplishments. On the basis of the team the Cowboys finished a close five point behind to win a Reserve Championship Team Title and the Cowgirls came in 4th in a close race for the women’s team title.
