The NMHU Baseball team wrapped up fall workouts with their annual Purple vs. Black Fall Classic. The Fall Classic is a best of seven game series between the two teams. This year the Purple team came out on top with a 4-2 series win over the Black team. The Purple team was headed by Coach Rich Janeway and Coach Nate Moore-Ness. The Black team was headed by Coach Kristian Sifuentes.
The Purple team started out the series with a bang as they pulled out to 2-0 lead in the series taking games one and two by scores of 7-6 and 10-8. The Black team then came back with some fire power if their own by taking games three and four of the series by scores of 16-6 and 15-13 to knot the series up at two games apiece. The Purple team then took game five with a convincing 10-2 win over the Black team to take the series lead 3-2. The Purple then polished off the Black team with a dramatic come from behind 9-8 victory as
Phillip Rodriguez forced extra inning with a one out homerun over the left field fence. The Purple team would get the win with
Christian Garcia scoring with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a passed ball to get the series win for Coach Rich Janeway and the Purple team.
Most Valuable Player for the series is
Danny Brown from the Purple Team. Brown had a great series, finishing with a .625 batting average. Brown had 10 hits in 16 at bats, three doubles, two homeruns and 10 RBI’s. On top of all that Brown had two appearances on the mound and finished with a 0.00 ERA and the series clinching win in game six.
Other outstanding performers for the Purple team were: Trent Evins and Phil Rodriguez. Evins had two great appearances on the mound for the Purple team with two appearances and one win in 12 innings pitched. Evins recorded eight strikeouts and only allowed 14 hits in 53 batters faced and ended the series with a 2.25 ERA. Evins also finished the series batting .500 with two at bats and one double with two RBI’s. Rodriguez finished the series batting .429 with nine hits, two doubles, one homerun and three RBI’s.
Outstanding performers for the Black team were:
Robert Vasquez and Tommy DeAngelis. Vazquez had a great series as he finished with a .500 batting average. Vazquez recorded 11 hits in 22 at bats, one double, three homeruns and 10 RBI’s. DeAngelis finished with a .500 batting average as well with one double, two triples, one homerun and nine RBI’s.
This series concluded Cowboy Baseball for the fall semester. The Cowboys will kick off the season on the road as they travel to 2/5/10 when they take on in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University.
