The NMHU Baseball program and Head Coach Steve Jones are pleased to announce the signing of three freshman athletes that will be reporting to NMHU in the fall of 2010. This is the first time in Coach Jones’ 12 year tenure that he has signed a freshman in the early signing period. The Cowboys will be adding Cody Calhoun (R/R, OF/P, Albuquerque, N.M.), Eric Hagen (R/R, OF, Albuquerque, N.M.) and Lance Gruber (L/L, P/1B, El Paso, Texas) to their roster in 2010.

Cody Calhoun is an Outfielder/Pitcher from Cibola HS in Albuquerque, N.M. Calhoun is also a product of the Albuquerque Baseball Academy. He is a very outstanding player that will develop into a great asset for the Cowboys in the near future.

“Cody is a versatile player that has a chance to be a two-way guy for us. He is a smart kid with a great baseball mind,” says Coach Steve Jones of his newest signee.

Eric Hagen is an Outfielder from Valley HS in Albuquerque, N.M. Hagen is a brother to Bert Hagen, a current member of the Cowboys baseball squad. Hagen has been a very talented outfielder for Valley HS and will be a contributor to the Cowboy program. Hagen is also a product of the Albuquerque Baseball Academy.

“Eric just kind of emerged on the scene; he is a great athlete with a 92 mph arm from the outfield. If Eric continues to progress like he has been he will have a very successful career here at Highlands,” says Coach Steve Jones of Hagen.

Lance Gruber is a Pitcher/ First Baseman from Americas HS in El Paso, Texas. Gruber is a great pitcher as well as good with the bat. Gruber look to be a two-way athlete for the Cowboys and will fit in well with the Cowboys aggressive offensive style. Gruber is also associated with the Albuquerque Baseball Academy.

“Lance is good on the mound and also swings it from the left side. Lance is another talented young player that will have a chance to make an immediate impact for us,” says Coach Steve Jones of Gruber.

“I am very excited at the opportunity to have these young men become members of the Cowboy Baseball family. These three are all outstanding young men who not only excel on the field but in the classroom. All three of these young men represent the type of athlete we are trying to recruit to NMHU.

The Cowboys are coming off a NCAA Regional Appearance and are returning all but three starters from last season’s squad. The Cowboys will kick-off their season on 2/5/10 on the road against Eastern New Mexico University.
