Cowboys Fall to Midwestern State 41-0
Bookmark and Share

The NMHU Cowboys had a rough opening weekend as they fell to the Mustangs of Midwestern State University 41-0 on 8/29. The Cowboys just couldn’t get things going offensively as they managed to only muster up 124 yards of total offense. The Cowboys will have to regroup quickly this upcoming week as they have a short period between games as they take on Washburn University on 9/4 in Topeka, Kansas.

The Cowboy defense started out the game on fire as they forced the Midwestern off the field with a three and out. The Cowboys offense then took the field for the first time in 2009 and seemed to control the ball well as they ate up 3:27 off the clock on a seven play 17 yard drive. Then the Midwestern offense struck first in the last two minutes of the first quarter as MSU quarterback, Zack Eskridge, completed a 14 yard pass to Tyron Morrison for the game’s first score, after that it was all MSU as the Mustangs would score 34 more unanswered points throughout the remainder of the game. The Cowboys struggled offensively throughout the entire game as the Cowboys threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball once, two of which were taken in for MSU scores.

Offensively the Cowboys struggled as a whole to move the ball. Robert Grant (Soph.; 6’0”; 170; Tucson, Ariz.) led all NMHU running backs with 41 yards on 13 carries. QB Narcisco Diaz (Sr.; 6’0”; 195; Los Angeles, Calif.) completed seven of 25 passes and threw two interceptions on the day. Max Taylor (Jr.; 6’1”; 180; Riverside, Calif.) led all HU receivers with one catch for 25 yards

Defensively the Cowboys had a few hiccups that resulted in MSU points, but as a whole look better than last season. TJ Norris (Jr.; 5’11”; 225; Longview, Texas) led all defenders in tackles with 13 for the day.

The Cowboys will have a short week ahead of them as they hit the road for another long road trip to take on the Ichabods of Washburn University on 9/4 in Topeka, Kansas. The Washburn game will not be available on the B2 Networks, but will be carried on 96.7 SAM FM in Las Vegas, NM.
