Homecoming 2009 came to bitter end as the NMHU Cowboys fell to the Grizzlies of Adams State College on 9/26 by a final score of 27-7. Adams State capitalized on some early turnovers by the Cowboys to take the lead and never looked back. The Cowboys are now 0-5 overall this season and 0-3 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will hit the road this week for a long road trip to Chadron, Neb. as they take on the Chadron State Eagles on 10/3 at 12:00pm.

Turnovers are what led to the first two ASC scores of the game. A fumble by NMHU’s Robert Grant (6’0”; 170; FR; Tucson, Ariz.) set up a four play nine yard scoring drive that resulted in a 26 yard field goal for the Grizzlies to take and early 3-0 lead. The very next possession a Jordan Mendoza (6’3”; 195; FR; Clovis, N.M.) pass was intercepted by ASC’s Levi Gallas for a 28 yard interception return for a touchdown to extend the ASC lead to 10-0. The Cowboys lone score of the day came off of a Herman Young (6’1”; 230; SO; Oxnard, Calif.) one yard touchdown run late in the first half. The Cowboys fought hard, but due to early mistakes the Cowboys put themselves in a hole that they couldn’t escape as they fell by a final score of 27-7.

Offensively the Cowboys finished with a 217 total yards (96 rushing and 121 receiving). Robert Grant led the Cowboys in rushing with 43 yards and a long of 10 yards. Jordan Mendoza finished the night completing seven of 27 passes with one interception and was sacked three times.

Defensively the Cowboys finished the night allowing 350 yards (122 rushing and 228 yards passing). Thomas Raiola (6’0”; 230; SR; Greeley, Colo.) led all defenders in tackles with 10 for the game. Raiola also had three tackles for a loss of four yards. TJ Norris (5’11”; 225; SO; Longview, Texas) was second in tackles with seven and one sack for a loss of eight yards. Josh Conway (6’3”; 245; SR; Albuquerque, N.M.) and Jason Burns (6’1”; 260; SR; Clovis N.M.) each finished the night with six tackles each.

The Cowboys will hit the road this week as they travel to Chadron, Neb. to take on the Chadron State College Eagles on 10/3 at 12:00pm. If you can’t make the trip to Chadron to watch your Cowboys in action you can watch them live on the B2 Networks.
