Cowboys Excel on the Diamond and in the Classroom
Cowboy Baseball has always been a program that has excelled on the field for New Mexico Highlands University; they are regularly at the top of many NCAA statistical categories as well as being in the hunt for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title. The Cowboys and Head Coach Steve Jones have cause to celebrate early as they are being recognized for excelling in both their work on the field as well as in the classroom. In the most recent Collegiate Baseball Magazine Pre-Season Poll the Cowboys have been ranked as the 41st team in the nation. That is the highest pre-season ranking that the Cowboys have received under Coach Jones. The Cowboys have also excelled in the classroom as they finished the 2009 fall semester with a team GPA of 3.59, the highest amongst all athletic teams at New Mexico Highlands University. The Cowboys are coming off one of their most season seasons on record as they finished with a 39-21 record and qualified for the NCAA Regional Tournament in 2009.
“Both of these honors are awesome. This is the highest team GPA we’ve had in my 13 years at Highlands. I’m extremely proud of my team. It’s not every year that a team can have the success we have had on the field and excel at this level in the classroom. Being ranked 41st in the nation is a great honor, we have worked hard and I’m glad people are taking notice. Having a squad that can balance their athletics and academics is something very special” said Cowboys
Head Coach Steve Jones.
The NMHU Cowboys will hit the field for their season opener on the road as they take on in-state rival Eastern New Mexico on 2/5 at 2:00pm. The Cowboys will then have their home opener on 2/6 when they host Eastern New Mexico for a doubleheader starting at 11:00am.
