Mountaineers Drop Cowgirls

The NMHU Cowgirl Basketball team travelled to Gunnison, CO to take on the Mountaineers of Western State College as they come close to wrapping up their season. The Mountaineers came away with the victory and securing their spot in the RMAC Shootout as they beat the Cowgirls 90-81. At one point in the night, the Cowgirls were down by as much as 17 points. The Cowgirls had four players in double digits for scoring and one lone Cowgirl had a double- double.

The Cowgirls had eight players score points as the Mountaineers depended on the six players to score their points. Jessica Armijo led the scoring with 22 points. She added in three rebounds and a steal for the Cowgirls. Whitley Coca had 17 points on the night, and added in eight rebounds and four assists. Amanda Beauchamp also scored in the double digits with 13 points, four rebounds and a steal. Rounding out the Cowgirls’ double digit scoring was Briana Gholston who led the Cowgirls’ defense and had a double- double on the night with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cowgirls only missed one free throw on the night to make their free throw percentage 92.9%, while the Mountaineers were 69.4% from the charity line.

The Cowgirls will now travel to Grand Junction, CO for their last regular season game against the Mesa State College Mavericks. The last time these two teams played, the Mavericks won by three points with a last second free throw.
