The #12 NMHU Cowboys looked unstoppable on 3/23 as they rolled over the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico University by a final score of 21-0. The Cowboys started out on fire as they racked up 12 runs in the first three innings. The Cowboys are now 18-5 overall this season as they are off to one of their best starts in recent memory.

The NMHU Cowboys showed why they are ranked nationally in the three major polls in NCAA DII baseball as they convincingly dismantled the ENMU Greyhounds. The Cowboys are ranked 12th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Poll, 20th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper DII Poll and 23rd in the Ping! Baseball DII Top 30. The Cowboys racked up an impressive .604 team batting average for the day. The .604 team batting average is a season high for the Cowboys. The Cowboys shelled the ENMU pitching as they ended the day with six doubles and two homeruns.

Starting on the mound for the Cowboys was Steven Becerra (1-1). Becerra earned his first win of the season with a strong four inning performance for the Cowboys. Becerra allowed just one hit and no earned runs in his four innings of work. Becerra recorded two strikeouts for the day. Coming in for relief of Becerra was Cruz Sedilllo, Dylan Wisneski, Steve Gabbert Lawrence Lasenberry and Derek Grieve. All five pitchers pitched one inning. Sedillo allowed one hit in his appearance and no runs. Wisneski allowed one hit, no runs and recorded one strikeout. Gabbert pitched a hitless inning as well as recorded one strikeout. Lasenberry also pitched a hitless inning and recorded one strikeout. Grieve would come in for the final inning and allow one hit and no runs.

There were many outstanding performances for the Cowboys against the Greyhounds, but three Cowboys went above and beyond in the Cowboys lopsided win. David Bustillos, Christian Garcia and Thomas DeAngelis all had tremendous days for the Cowboys. Bustillos went an amazing 6-6 for the day with four runs scored, three RBI’s and one double. Garcia went 4-4 with three runs scored, two RBI’s and one double. DeAngelis went 3-3 with one run scored and two RBI’s.

The Cowboys will take to the road this week as they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on the Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney for a four game series on 3/26.
