Rodeo Team Fares Well at Regionals

The NMHU Rodeo Team has had a very hard fought competitive year within the Grand Canyon Region.

Congratulations to the Women’s team of Sarah Zybach, Jackie Smith, Dixie Richards, Callie Jo Moore, Amy Wilson, Samantha Lane, Anastasia Chroninger, and Lynnelle Logan for their 3rd place Championship performance this past season. The Women’s team also finished the season in 16th place in the nation.

Richards is NMHU’s Grand Canyon Regional Champion Goat Tier. She fought for a 4th place finish in the All Around standings by competing in the Breakaway Roping and the Goat Tying. In the Breakaway Roping she finished 9th. Her performance in the region has earned her an 18th place finish in the nation among Goat Tiers.

Zybach is NMHU’s Grand Canyon Regional Reserve Champion Goat Tier. Sarah also fought throughout her senior year to have a 14th place finish in the Breakaway Roping. As a member of the HU Cowgirls Rodeo Team, Sarah has earned College National Finals Qualifications in the Breakaway Roping, Goat Tying, and the Barrel Race. Congratulations on a great career.

Smith had a great season in the Breakaway Roping and Goat Tying. In the Breakaway Roping she finished 4th and in the Goat Tying she finished 6th.

Lane had a good season on her young horse in the Barrel Race to finish 9th. She has been working hard to develop her roping and goat tying skills. Callie Moore has been a very competitive athlete over the last season with a 10th place finish in the Breakaway roping. She has also competed successfully in the Barrel Race. Amy Wilson, in her first season as a Cowgirl, finished 13th in the Barrel Race.

The Men finished 6th in the team category overall.

Dirk Tavenner is NMHU’s Grand Canyon Regional Reserve Champion Steer Wrestler. His Steer Wrestling Regional efforts earned him National recognition by finishing 7th. He also was very competitive in the Tie Down Roping with a 7th place finish. His multi event efforts placed him 5th in the All Around standings.

Jesse Estrada finished 5th in the Bareback Riding event after his strong season performance. Kurtis Barry had a good freshman season in the Tie Down Roping with an 11th place finish.


Jose Griego fought hard to finish 9th in the Bull Riding event. Jose was our Grand Canyon Regional Champion Bull Rider in 2009. Jackie Smith has spent most of his college career as a Cowboy. He has worked hard to have a successful senior season. He finished up placing 13th in the Tie Down Roping.


Robert Martinez had a great year competing in the Team Roping, by finishing up 9th overall on the season with his partner Dustin Pool. He has worked hard and earned some qualifications in the Tie Down Roping as well.

Pool competed in Team Roping, Tie Down Roping, and Steer Wrestling this season. He had a 9th place finish in the Team Roping event with his partner Martinez. Congratulations for his accomplishments throughout his college career.

The season was a great building year and the athletes worked hard all season and were able to see their benefits come out in their performances. Thank you for all of the continued support the community has given to the Rodeo Team and we are looking forward to a great season next year.
