The Cowgirl Soccer team began their season with a game against the Saints from St. Martin’s University on 9/5. The Cowgirls took the early lead, allowed the Saints to catch up and then didn’t look back from there. The Cowgirls won with a final score of 4-1.

The first goal of the game came from Krista Mashak, off a Julissa Rodriguez assist. With the clock at 25:47 into the game, Mashak shot after crossing from right to left, and then flipped the shot over the Keeper for the Saints’ head.

The Saints tried to regroup as the clock was at 32:56 as a player took the shot on goal but the shot was rebounded. As the shot was rebounded another Saint player kicked the ball in on the rebound making the score even at 1-1.

After the first half, the Cowgirls kicked their game into high gear as they took to the field. Not even five minutes into the second half, it was Rodriguez who would score on a penalty kick for the Cowgirls to make the score 2-1.

Rodriguez then, not even 10 minutes after her penalty kick, got pass on a breakaway and scored again for the Cowgirls, unassisted. Keeping with the same beat, Rodriguez scored for a third time with less than five minutes left in the game off of a deflection.

Rodriguez’s hat trick would take the Cowgirls up 4-1 and would give them their first win of the season. She is now tied with last season’s high scorer, after only one game.

Amanda Rose Johnson was in the net for the Cowgirls for the entire game. She had five saves and one goal allowed.

The Cowgirls had more shots and shots on goal than the Saints. The Cowgirls had 13 shots and 7 shots on goal, as the Saints had 12 and 6, respectively.

The Cowgirls will continue playing on the road as they take on Grand Canyon University on 9/ 7 before returning home to take on the Eastern New Mexico Zias on 9/10.
