The NMHU Cowboy Basketball team has qualified for the Regional tournament to be played in Mankato, Minnesota this weekend. The Cowboys are one of four RMAC teams qualified for the tourney after finishing 20-10 overall this season. The Cowgirl Softball team took to the road to take on the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. The Cowgirls won the series taking three of the four games. This is the first RMAC series the Cowgirls have won since Head Coach Shellie Broyles took to the helm in the 2008 season. The Cowgirls took game one in convincing fashion with a 13-4 score. Leading the Cowgirls to their first win on the weekend was freshman pitcher Melissa Martinez. She pitched the entire six innings and recorded 13 strikeouts. The #22 NMHU Cowboys completed their second straight RMAC series win of the season on 3/6 as they split in a double header with the Mavericks of Mesa State College. The Cowboys had won the first game of the series on 3/5 by a final score of 8-3 and would fall in game two 21-4 but would rebound and get the series win 18-4 in game two on 3/6. The Cowboys would then play the Mavericks in a non-RMAC game on 3/7 and fall 12-8. The Cowboys are now 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in RMAC play. The NMHU Cowboys fell in the RMAC Championship game on 3/6 in Pueblo, Colo. to the Roadrunners of Metro State College by a final score of 83-79. The Cowboys are now 20-10 on the season and 12-7 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will now wait and see where they are placed amongst the region’s best in the 2010 NCAA Central Region Tournament. The NMHU Cowboys took on the Colorado Christian University Cougars on 3/5 in the semi-finals of the RMAC Shootout and would come away with the win by a final score of 96-64. The Cowboys now advance to the RMAC Championship game against Metro State College on 3/6 at 5:00 pm in Pueblo, Colo. Cowgirl Jessica Armijo has received post season honors as a member of the 2nd Team All West team. The senior guard from Las Vegas, NM helped lead the Cowgirls to an 11-15 overall record, their best finish in years. Armijo led the Cowgirls in scoring with 286 points on the season, putting her in the 22nd spot in the RMAC while playing 846 total minutes. Her three point shooting percentage was .338, which put her at 21st in the RMAC. The Cowboy Wrestling team completed their regular season as they finished in ninth place at the 2010 Super Regional Four/ RMAC tournament in Alamosa, CO this past weekend beating out Colorado Scool of Mines and Mesa State College.
