The #11 New Mexico Highlands University baseball team solidified their first place position atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on 3/13 as they took two out of three games from the Roadrunners of Metro State College. The Cowboys started out the series slow as they dropped the first game 12-8 but would rebound in the Saturday double header as they swept the Roadrunners by scores of 8-4 and 4-1 respectively. The Cowboys are off to a great start as they are now 16-5 on the season and 7-2 in RMAC play. New Mexico Highlands University track and field standout Angella Graham, earned two more All-American honors at the NCAA National Indoor championships in Albuquerque, NM, 3/12 and 3/13. NMHU’s own Seth Wright made history on 3/13 in Omaha, NE as he wrestled his way to a NCAA Division II National Championship. This is the first ever NCAA National Championship for NMHU in any sport. Wright's victory came as he went 4-0 for the tournament. Wright’s first victory came over Augustana’s Alex Meger with a 10-8 decision. The NMHU Cowboys fell in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional Tournament to the Vikings of Augustana College by a final score of 87-73. The Cowboys started out on fire as they ran with the Vikings for the first minutes of the ball game but would not be able to keep up as the Vikings sharpshooters racked up the points, helping them advance to the semi-finals. The NMHU Cowgirl Softball team hosted the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on 3/12. The Cowgirls came away with two wins on the day as they head into another double header against the Orediggers on 3/13. The Cowgirls are now 9-6 overall and 5-1 in RMAC play. The Cowgirls are off to the best start in recent years and are making strides through the RMAC. The NMHU Cowboy Basketball team has qualified for the Regional tournament to be played in Mankato, Minnesota this weekend. The Cowboys are one of four RMAC teams qualified for the tourney after finishing 20-10 overall this season. The Cowgirl Softball team took to the road to take on the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. The Cowgirls won the series taking three of the four games. This is the first RMAC series the Cowgirls have won since Head Coach Shellie Broyles took to the helm in the 2008 season. The Cowgirls took game one in convincing fashion with a 13-4 score. Leading the Cowgirls to their first win on the weekend was freshman pitcher Melissa Martinez. She pitched the entire six innings and recorded 13 strikeouts. The #22 NMHU Cowboys completed their second straight RMAC series win of the season on 3/6 as they split in a double header with the Mavericks of Mesa State College. The Cowboys had won the first game of the series on 3/5 by a final score of 8-3 and would fall in game two 21-4 but would rebound and get the series win 18-4 in game two on 3/6. The Cowboys would then play the Mavericks in a non-RMAC game on 3/7 and fall 12-8. The Cowboys are now 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in RMAC play. The NMHU Cowboys fell in the RMAC Championship game on 3/6 in Pueblo, Colo. to the Roadrunners of Metro State College by a final score of 83-79. The Cowboys are now 20-10 on the season and 12-7 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will now wait and see where they are placed amongst the region’s best in the 2010 NCAA Central Region Tournament. The NMHU Cowboys took on the Colorado Christian University Cougars on 3/5 in the semi-finals of the RMAC Shootout and would come away with the win by a final score of 96-64. The Cowboys now advance to the RMAC Championship game against Metro State College on 3/6 at 5:00 pm in Pueblo, Colo.
