The 2010 NMHU Cowboys are set to take the field in their 2010 home opener as they take on the Mustangs of Midwestern State University on 9/2 at 7:00 pm in Perkins Stadium. The Cowboys look to avenge the 41-0 loss they experienced at the hands of the Mustangs in their 2009 opener. The Cowboys have made some addition since then and look to turn some heads in their 2010 opener. The NMHU Football team concluded their spring practices on 4/24 with their annual Purple vs. Black Scrimmage in Perkins Stadium. The Cowboys had about 200 people show up for the event. Family, friends, alumni and Cowboy Football recruits all showed up for the scrimmage and had a great time. The Cowboys showed great improvement on both sides of the ball. The NMHU Cowboy Football program is pleased to announce their 2010 recruiting class. The Cowboys will be adding 16 new Cowboys to their roster in the fall along with 12 mid-year transfers. All 16 of the Cowboys signees are freshmen from the states of Texas, California and Washington. The NMHU Cowboy Football program is pleased to announce the hiring of former Fort Lewis College Head Coach Ed Rifilato. Rifilato will serve as the Cowboys Defensive Coordinator. Rifilato is no stranger to Cowboy Football as this will be his second stint with the Cowboy program. Rifilato served as head coach of the Cowboys in the 1999 season. The NMHU Cowboys rode a huge fourth quarter surge to come out on top over the visiting Fort Lewis Skyhawks. The Cowboys scored 21 points in the fourth quarter for the come from behind win and their first win of the 2009 season. The Cowboys ended the day with 438 total yards and a season high 39 points. Despite their best offensive showing of the season, the Cowboys fell to in-state rival Western New Mexico University in the “Warrior Helmet” game 50-30 on 10/24. The Cowboys out gained the Mustangs in total offensive yards with a season high of 498 yards, as opposed to WNMU’s 455 total offensive yards. The Cowboys fall to 0-9 on the season and 0-7 in RMAC play. The NMHU Cowboys fell to the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves by a score of 35-7 on 10/17. The Cowboys are now 0-8 on the season and 0-6 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will have to gear up for their next opponent as they hit the road to Silver City, N.M. to take on the Western New Mexico Mustangs. The Cowboys and the Mustangs will be playing for the “Warrior Helmet” on 10/24. The “Warrior Helmet” is a traveling trophy between the two teams. The series is tied at 1-1. Homecoming 2009 came to bitter end as the NMHU Cowboys fell to the Grizzlies of Adams State College on 9/26 by a final score of 27-7. Adams State capitalized on some early turnovers by the Cowboys to take the lead and never looked back. The Cowboys are now 0-5 overall this season and 0-3 in RMAC play.
